MFM mourns the loss of Ato Yilma Taye
Having grown up in a small family, his big heart and unwavering reliability enabled him to build a large family of colleagues, companions and partners across all strata of society and in every part of the country and beyond. His focus was always on one thing: the situation of people in rural areas. He never lost sight of what truly matters to people and what they need.
That is why he was constantly drawn back out into the field, to stay in touch and witness the progress of the projects and developments first-hand, for he was firmly convinced that this was the only way to get closest to the truth and to what really matters. He demanded a great deal of himself but also had high expectations of the commitment and personal responsibility of those around him: his colleagues, partners and even the families with whom he worked in the project regions. For him, the principle of ‘helping people to help themselves’ was closely linked to the personal responsibility of each individual.
In this way, he played a significant role, both directly and indirectly, in transforming the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and opening up opportunities for them that would not have been possible without his commitment. He was a man of the people: guided by principles and traditions, yet always willing to reconsider them in the face of sound arguments, as he was very open to change. It is largely thanks to him that the foundation has continued to maintain its standing and reputation in Ethiopia even after the death of its founder, Karlheinz Böhm.
He drew strength and confidence from his deep faith, his enthusiasm for nature and his profound connection with the people for whom he championed time and again. His legacy lives on in the results of his actions: in the schools, water points and newly planted forests. And in the memories of the many people who were privileged to accompany him on his life’s journey.
Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, his relatives and all his colleagues in Ethiopia.
